Major music streaming services have removed racist, antisemitic and homophobic content from their platforms, following an investigation.

The BBC found sections of Hitler’s speeches, references to white power and celebrations of the Holocaust present in songs on certain services.

Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and Deezer are the platforms that have removed content since the investigation.

According to the BBC, Spotify said the content unearthed violated its hate content policy and YouTube said there was no place for hate on its platform. Apple Music has now hidden the majority of the songs and is looking into the rest, while Deezer is yet to comment but is investigating the issue.

One song on Spotify contained the lyrics: “Aryan child, listen to what is said/ So rise your hand and learn to love your land/ For the white revolution needs your uncorrupted hand.”

Eric Ward, a civil rights strategist at the Western States Centre, said: “The onus is on streaming platforms to do a better job at monitoring and searching for this music.”

He added that people “trust streaming services” and do not use them “to be presented with hate music and hate lyrics”.

In August, Rita Ora, Lewis Capaldi, Nile Rodgers and Little Mix were among the 700 music industry figures to sign an open letter urging people to “wipe out racism now”.

The letter cites recent “anti-Jewish racism”, seemingly in reference to grime artist Wiley’s attacks on the Jewish community.

Wiley’s anti-Semitic posts were branded “abhorrent” by prime minister Boris Johnson and condemned by a number of other figures in politics and music.

In response to the posts, Wiley was dropped by his management company and banned from Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

The Premium subscription costs R $ 16,90 per month (students pay half) and the advantages over the free plan are practically the same as for the paid Spotify plan, but with the difference that the audio is transmitted with more quality in the subscription paid than in the free plan.

Those who are customers of the TIM operator can take advantage of Deezer at a discount: R $ 15,39 per month for postpaid customers and R $ 4,90 per week for pre and control customers. There is also the Deezer HiFi, which uses the technology of the same name to transmit audio over the internet without loss of quality. The plan costs R $ 33,80 per month.

Apple Music

Contrary to what many people may think, Apple Music works normally for Android smartphones. The big difference in relation to its competitors described above is that the service does not allow the user to enjoy a limited version for free.

The good news is that new registrations get three months of free use with the individual subscription. If you are not interested in staying with the services after the promotion, remember to cancel before expiration.

Apple Music also has original programs, shows and exclusive content, as well as a full radio, curated by people, called Beats 1. It is the service with the cheapest family plan among all the options. And, like the competitors, this one also offers “half price” for university students.

YouTube Music

YouTube Music arrived in Brazil in 2018. It comes to take the place of Google Play Music, which remains active. If you subscribe to one, you gain access to the other. And if you subscribe to YouTube Premium, it takes both and also the ad-free version with downloads from the video site.

YouTube Music is divided into three tabs, with personalized recommendations on the first, hot clips on the second, and a library of tracks and artists saved (and downloaded) on the third. Tidal

Tidal is the music streaming service created by rapper Jay-Z. He arrived in the country in 2015 and today has a partnership with the operator Vivo. Customers can pay R $ 16,90 per month, depending on the payment plan. Students pay half.

Currently, the service brings more than 35 million songs and about 85 thousand HD clips in its collection. Users can access these songs through two plans. The entry plan offers audio in aac format at a rate of 320 kbps.

The plan Tidal HiFi, in turn, allows the user to listen to the entire collection of the website in Lossless format, without compression or loss of quality, for R $ 33,80 per month. Jay Z himself, however, has already stated that the plan is only recommended for users who have high quality sound equipment.

The Family Plan allows up to five people to share a single subscription, which costs R $ 25,35 for the standard package or R $ 50,80 for the high quality version.

Amazon Music

The youngest to arrive in Brazil is the Amazon Music, which debuted in the country in September 2019. It has more than 50 million songs, personalized and curated playlists made up of Brazilian and international artists.

The standard plan costs R $ 16,90 per month, while the family member costs R $ 25,90 and allows up to six people to share the same subscription. Amazon Prime subscribers gain access to 2 million songs from the Music collection.
