Growl

Work together to distribute the bites and wounds amongst the village. Some of you are wolves trying to "turn" the others. When Night falls, everyone secretly passes cards to their neighbors! 4-10 players (up to 15 with more cards) all claim to be innocent humans, but one (or more) of them is Wolf Zero, the original werewolf that wants to infect the village! The deck of cards sits. Growl definition is - rumble. How to use growl in a sentence.

A word of advice for every hunter: please toggle this off whenever you queue in the Random Dungeon Finder.

Turn it off only when the tank demands.

Growl will eat Grounding Totems in PvP.
Grounding Totems will eat Freeze Traps.
Get your UI/addons to show when Grounding Totem is up, then make sure to Growl before you scatter/trap the healer/dispeller. This requires you to be aware of where your pet is at that moment (if it's out of range/LoS to growl it's target, or if the Growl target is not in range of the Grounding Totem, it obviously won't work).

Comment by SilentJ

While Qonos does make a strong argument, I don't fully agree with some of his points.
1) If the pet's Growl is pulling mobs away from the tank, then the tank needs to get his game up, pure and simple. Growl doesn't generate nearly as much threat as what a tank can put out; if you're finding yourself fighting a pet for threat, then I'm sorry but you're doing something wrong.

Against a single target, a tank has enough tools at his/her disposal to out-threat a Growling pet with ease. However, this isn't the case with multiple targets. Attacks that are designed for AOE tanking (examples: Hammer of the Righteous, Consecrate, Divine Wrath) cause enough threat to keep them glued to the tank, but they are just barely enough to out-threat Growl on one single target. You are quick to point to poor tanking performance as a cause for a pet pulling aggro, but a tank has to spread threat evenly across all targets. For a tank to do this while competing with Growl's large threat generation against one target is absurd.
2) If things go sideways, the pet's threat is going to suddenly become important for off-tanking. This is especially true if the tank dies and pets need to OT for a bit, it helps tremendously to have that head-start on threat.

I can agree with this, but I find that in most situations where a tank gets stomped, it's usually the result of multiple targets attacking him/her. Since a hunter's pet is most likely Growling one target for the duration of the fight, you will have that one target under control, but you have to take the remaining others into consideration, and chances are good that they're all dotted, thereby making CC and kiting that much more difficult.
If for some reason the pet pulls the mob away from you, then it's on the hunter to keep the pet alive and manage the agro. Feel free to laugh at and mock the hunter if he and his pet die as a result... though a good hunter will manage this just fine.

Yes and no. If a pet does pull a mob away from a tank, then it's the tank's job to take aggro back, which can be done with a simple one-button taunt. A very simple solution really, but your condescending views on tanks makes your arguments judgmental and biased.
A hunter with an effective rotation/priority will easily pull agro off his pet, so what does that say about you if you can't even keep agro from the hunter AND his pet?

As I mentioned above, a tank has enough single-target tools at his/her disposal to out-threat a Growling pet with ease. You're quick to point the finger at the tank, but you didn't consider the possibility of large differences in overall item levels between the tank and the hunter. It seems that you would rather work against the tank when you could be working alongside him/her. If you feel that your tank isn't producing enough aggro, you can assist with Misdirect. You can also use Feign Death to wipe your own threat clean.

Comment by Rapteg

Heh, growl pull static amout of threat, it's hard to manage when you pull a pack of mobs, and 1 of this mobs suddenly changes target (pull aggro << growl aggro) and starts to hit a pet. Even Thunderclap can't overraggro 2 growls, so, you have to hit this mob with a taunt, or hard hitting ability.

WRONG! always turn Growl off in dungeons... learned that the hard way...

Comment by Humanenemy

Here's a useful macro for Growl (in pvp) so your traps won't get grounded by grounding totem.
Growler guys
/stopcasting
/cast Scatter Shot
/cast Growl

Since Growl is a melee range spell, the ' part of the macro will cause your pet to use Growl on whatever it's attacking, rather than wasting 2-4 seconds reaching to your current target.

Comment by shiri

Changed in 5.0.4 to act as a true taunt and should now really always be turned off by default in instances.

Comment by edladd

It is quite annoying now to have pets taunting aggro off me as a tank in dungeons. IMO, rather than making it a 'true taunt' that puts them at the top of the aggro table, it should just put the pet ahead of the hunter in the aggro table. This way, when the hunter is soloing the taunt will work as it always did - and it will act like it is turned off in dungeons except when the hunter actually out-threats the tank.

Comment by Arnen

This doesn't seem to work on a lot of mobs, nowadays. Named quest mobs, rares, brawler's guild fights... Sometimes it won't auto-cast and you have to hit it manually, sometimes it will just plain refuse to work. Best bet is to just pre-load misdirection on your pet and keep spamming it throughout fights with non-generic mobs.

Comment by Arenvalde

Here's the instance macro you want, Hunters. Set your tank as your focus and help him out immensely at the beginning of any pull.
/stopmacro
/target focustarget
/petattack
/petassist
/petautocastoff Growl
/petautocaston Cower
/Aspect of the Hawk
/cast Roar of Sacrifice
/cast Misdirection
/cast Hunter's Mark
Your pet will never growl in an instance, your pet will protect your tank from crits, and you will pull all your aggro onto the tank. For non-cunning pets, take out the Roar of Sacrifice line.
I have 3 of these (one with Roar, one without, and one that turns Growl on for soloing) and I pick whichever one I need and set it to tilde (`).

Comment by BMHunterMain

I am still baffled as to why they don't include Growl in a pet's actionbar by default considering how it is the single most important pet ability to toggle off and on again when moving from solo play to group pve... especially considering that pets' basic attack is given a slot on the actionbar, an ability that you never have any cause to toggle off ever for any reason. As a new player, I did literally dozens of dungeons (during Cata, this was less of an issue then) and caused hundreds of players much frustration before anybody took the time to tell me to open up my spellbook, click the pet tab, find 'Growl' and left-click to turn it off of auto-cast in dungeons. Up until that point I had been cursed out plenty, but if anybody realized exactly what I was doing wrong, they didn't or couldn't explain it to me. A tutorial consisting of a single sentence could fix it all, there are friggin pet battle tutorials in the game now but this extremely basic game mechanic that is neither explained nor intuitive apparently doesn't warrant the same treatment.

Comment by Skullhawk13

Growl in dungeons is something you should keep handy on a bar, but disabled by default. Your pet can be rezed in two seconds at very little cost, the healer would need a combat rez for the same to be true. This skill has it's purpose, but if you aren't sure what that purpose is, it's better not to use it in group content at all.

Comment by Sarthorius

As of 6.* I'm experiencing a pretty annoying issue.
Sometimes, when in Autocast, the pet simply doesn't use it, even when the target switches to the hunter, the pet won't use it on its own, unless I click it manually, but forever.

Comment by Stizelswik

Ok I have had a serious problem since this last patch. The icon for 'Growl' has disappeared from my spell book. I even had a couple other people here in my house, look to make sure I hadn't missed it somehow. It is NOT in there anywhere! We ALL (3 of us) looked under talents, and other places too. We cannot find Growl. Yet when I try to go into dungeons, people are telling me it is turned on.
SOMEONE Please help! Thank you!

Comment by MultiBix

Put this in a macro, attached to a commonly used spell, like Cobra Shot (or on all your spells):
/petautocaston Growl
/petautocastoff Growl
/cast Cobra Shot
/startattack
It will automatically turn off Growl whenever you attack while in a group, and do the opposite when you are alone.
You can also try the addon 'Growler'. It has a lot of pet handling functionality like Play Dead / Wake Up, Growl autocast off in group, stables browser and a lot more.
It can also send a message to the group when someone else is using growl.

Comment by Asthmabites

For those who can't find it after Legion:
No clue WHY Blizz took this off our bars but, after getting cursed at a lot by tanks who were less than helpful with their spamming trash talk while i was trying to find it, I finally left my pet dead. At the Lodge, I asked many hunters and only a few knew to look in the spell book on the pet tab and none knew how to link it to action bars.
You can't link it to your action bar but you can drag it to your pet's bar. Again, no clue why they did this but remember to manually do this to your pets before entering an instance.

Does anyone know how to track Auto Growl with TMW? (Tell Me When).

Comment by SargonStarblade

I was doing some PVP on my hunter the other day and it occurred to me that this ability should at least cause players hit by it to auto target the pet. Doesn't that make sense?

Comment by Nightshine067

I recently started playing again, was leveling my hunter alt, got complained to by someone in an instance about threat and my pet and Growl. I checked my growl button and found there is no way to turn off growl. I did have thunder stomp off by right clicking the little box and getting the 4 little corner check marks. I next checked my spellbook and found no Growl.
Hunters is this normal. What is the current state of Growl and pet threat in general for this hunter noob.

Comment by Sblieft

I've started playing again recently and I notice that when I summon a pet that their growl is not turned on even if I've left it enabled before dismissing them. No clue if this is a new or older change, caught me off guard is all. :-)

Comment by Varix12

Just got back to playing my Bm Hunter and this seems to generate as much threat as a wet noodle. I'm not squishy, so I survive, but I cannot seem to get mobs off me. I've even tried using my pet's attacks only while I don't do a thing and hope they gather enough aggro, and then my first little shot - BAM - they are on me in an instant instead. And misdirect doesn't seem to really work well enough to help, either.

Comment by grrly

im playing with my bm hunter friend and i told him to just go mm as his pets cant hold agro for snit... im a shadow priest at lv 58 and the moment i cast anything i get agro off his pets... its like growl doesn't work at all. not sure if its a bug or not

Comment by Jeolene

Growl is completely broken now, it no longer works in dungeons, raids or any elite in the outside world. It also sometimes has trouble keeping agro on regular mobs as well. I have noticed this throughout BFA, but it seems to be even worse now.

Growl is a low-pitched, guttural singing style, usually used by the singers of the death metal genre. It can also be heard in other types of heavy metal. They are low-pitched, guttural and typically hard to decipher. Also called a death grunt, death growl, or death vocal. Idiots might generally refer to it as 'cookie monster vocals'. But those are just that: idiots, and should be taken as so.
